Building link simply for the sake of building links is apparently frowned upon by Google and for very good reason, as well.
These Search Engine Optimization directories were proven to be not as friendly as they may have first appeared. The best approach, as far as a user and far as marketing perspective is concerned would obviously be to not have people gaming the system.
This would be terribly bad for business and no one wants to out of a job, therefore more should be done to rectify things of this nature.
